How to Choose the Right Wedding Videographer for Your Big Day
(without spiraling into decision fatigue)
Booking a wedding videographer is a big decision. You’re not just hiring someone to show up with a camera, you’re choosing the person who will spend the entire wedding day with you and shape how you remember your wedding for the rest of your life. No pressure, right?
It doesn’t have to be overwhelming, though, okay?
Here’s how to choose a wedding videographer that fits your vibe, values, and vision.
Step 1: Watch their work. Not just a video, watch a few.
A great wedding videographer will have a portfolio that feels consistent. Different couples, different venues, different lighting, but maintains a sense of artistic style.
When you’re watching their films, ask yourself:
Do their films make you feel something?
Is there a through line in quality and storytelling?
Does it seem like they truly understand their couples and the story they want told?
Can you picture yourself in one of those films?
This is where you start to spot the difference between someone who captures weddings and someone who creates art from them.
(If you're curious what this looks like for me, here's where you can peek at some of my wedding highlight films)
Step 2: Ask potential wedding videographers the right questions
Don’t be afraid to get in the weeds. Once you’ve got a few videographers on your radar, here are key questions to ask before you book:
What's your style?
Documentary? Cinematic? Nostalgic and vibey with Super 8 film? You want someone whose editing and storytelling style matches your moodboard, not someone trying to fit into it. Also, make sure you understand their approach on the wedding day. Are they more the hands-on, posing, directing type? Or is their style more unobtrusive, lived in, fly on the wall?
What’s included in your packages?
Not all wedding videos are created equal. For example, at Honey Fox Films, I offer preview films, highlight films, raw videos of the ceremony and speeches, audio, drone footage, and even extras like camcorder footage and Super 8, depending on the package. Some people want a whole wedding weekend documented. Others just want the ceremony and party. Either is great, just make sure your videographer can deliver your specific wants and needs.
What’s your turnaround time?
A wedding film is worth the wait, but it shouldn’t take forever, and you shouldn’t be left wondering when you will get the film back. Ask if you can expect sneak peeks and when the full delivery is expected to be complete. (And bonus, if you are interested in immediate photos and videos, you can hire me as your wedding content creator and get a little instant magic within 48 hours.)
Can I see a full-length film or two?
Highlight reels are beautiful. Viral TikToks and reels are fun. But the full highlight films will show you how a videographer tells the whole story, not just the flashy and trendy parts. I cannot emphasize how important it is that you research this, not only for your videographer, but all wedding professionals.
How do you work with other vendors (like the photographer)?
You want someone who works harmoniously with others. Wedding days are a team effort, and a seasoned professional will know how to blend in, not bulldoze through your timeline or stand in the photographer’s shot.
Step 3: Know the red flags
Let’s keep it real—here are a few signs it might not be the right fit:
Vague or incomplete packages
Poor communication (ghosting, unclear answers, weird vibes)
Poorly written contract, or worse, no contract at all
Inconsistent quality across their portfolio
No backup plan for gear failure or emergencies
“Trendy” editing that could feel dated in a few years
Pricing that feels too good to be true (because it probably is)
If your gut says “meh,” listen to it. You deserve to work with someone who makes you feel excited, not nervous.
Step 4: Connection matters more than you think
You’ll spend your whole wedding day around your videographer. So, beyond talent and professionalism, ask: Do I like this person? Do they listen to your ideas? Do they make you feel seen? Are they someone you’d actually enjoy being around for 10+ hours?
The best films come from a place of trust and collaboration. It’s not just about shared aesthetics, but compatible energy. At the end of the day, your wedding film should feel like you. And that starts with finding someone who gets you and your story.
Choose someone who sees you.
TL;DR: How to choose the right wedding videographer
Watch their portfolio and make sure it feels consistent and emotionally resonant
Ask real questions about style, packages, turnaround time, and experience
Trust your instincts on how they communicate and show up
Look for an energy match—someone you feel comfortable with
Check their offerings—especially if you love nostalgic touches like Super 8 or camcorder footage (hi, I offer all of those)
