What to Look for in a Wedding Videographer
AKA All the tea that you won’t find in a wedding videographer’s pricing guide.
There are certain things you know when you meet the right person.
You don’t need a checklist to fall in love. You just... feel it.
Choosing your wedding videographer should feel the same way.
Sure, there are logistics. You’ll want to make sure you take a look at their portfolio, compare package options, ask about turnaround time, and drone footage and audio gear. Make sure that their style matches your vision for the day. You’ll probably open a spreadsheet (or five) trying to keep track of the numbers.
But there’s something deeper to consider. And it won’t be listed on any price sheet.
It’s the feeling you’ll get watching your wedding film years from now. The way your partner looked at you when your attention was elsewhere. The sound of your dad laughing in the background. The softness of the light as it poured through the window while you got ready.
A good videographer captures the day.
A great one captures the soul of it.
So, what should you really be looking for?
Here are a few things that actually matter when hiring a wedding videographer.
1. Storytelling over spectacle
It’s easy to be dazzled by visuals. Gorgeous design, massive floral arrangements, and trendy fashion choices. But ask yourself: Do I feel anything when I watch this?
Look for a videographer whose work makes you pause. Not because it’s trendy or cinematic, but because it feels personal. Intimate. Real.
You want someone who knows how to turn your moments into meaning.
2. A calm, grounding presence
Your videographer will be with you on one of the most emotionally charged days of your life. Do they make you feel at ease? Can they read a room? Will they know when to disappear and when to lean in?
This work isn’t just technical. It’s intuitive.
3. An ear for what matters
Do they capture voices, vows, spontaneous toasts, those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it interactions?
Videography is a moving medium, so it isn’t just about what you see. It’s about what you hear and remember. Sometimes, it’s your best friend whispering “I love you” as you walk out the door. Sometimes it’s the squeaky giggles of your flower girl walking down the aisle. The audio tells its own story.
4. An editor with heart
Post-production is where the magic happens. The music, the pacing, the way scenes are stitched together, not just in the order they happened, but in a way that tells your story. This is where your memories become a film.
You want someone who doesn’t just assemble clips. You want someone who feels them.
Watch how they handle transitions. Emotion. Silence. That’s where you’ll find their voice.
5. A commitment to you, not just “content”
This one’s big. Some people show up to film a wedding. To share it for views.
Others show up to honor a marriage.
Ask yourself: Do I feel like this person cares about who we are? How do they feel about our story?
Because when they do, you’ll feel it in every frame.
And finally… trust your gut.
You can compare equipment lists and packages and travel discounts all day long. But at the end of it, this is someone who will be holding space for one of the most important days and stories of your life.
So when you find someone whose work feels like home, who sees you and not just another couple in a highlight ree, that’s the one worth keeping close.
And maybe — just maybe — that’s how you’ll know.
